Step 1: Make Sure You Can Physically Write Fast

Well not with a pen and paper! This is all about capturing your words electronically – if you have a keyboard you really need to be capable of typing 60wpm – if you can’t manage that – grab a cheap or free typing coach or game and practice – here’s a hint 10 fingers are better than two! If keyboarding is an issue for you consider learning how to dictate your articles – there is an art to it but people who like dictation swear by it.
Step 2: Have a routine and an office which helps you find your muse to order. Distractions are everywhere – so learn to focus, turn off the email, the chat, turn on the music – whatever is needed to focus on the task at hand – fast article writing.
Step 3: Writing and editing should be one and the same thing. Most journalists edit as they write – we are not producing War and Peace here – you need to be able to write copy with few if any errors first time through. Like any worthwhile skill it takes practice but its perfectly possible.
Step 4: Say it once – and then say it again and again. Ever noticed that the articles in your favorite magazines tend to repeat after a year or so? Notice how in spring there are always features on how to look good in a swimsuit and how to prepare the perfect barbecue? Not quite the same article of course -but a similar topic with a different slant – this is the art of researching once but producing multiple articles. Learn it – its the biggest time saver out there!
